Thesis: Technological Change brought radio to society that made it an American phenomenon.
Change is always something that you can rely on, especially in the media and in technology. I remember when VHS was the number one way to watch movies at home, and then it was crazy when the DVD came out when you can play the movie from a disc. Nowadays, Blu-Ray and MP4 players can play the movies as well as technology continues to evolve. So how did the Radio Industry form the way it became in the 1920s? Technological Change!
According to Media Now, Gulielmo Marconi invented the "wireless transmitter" which spawned the first uses of radio waves to send information. Titanic has one of the first uses of this invention in which it carried out messages for help. Over time after the Government had dominant control over it and during the ending of WWI, "new technological developments...made it clear that radio could be used for various purposes"(Straubhaar, 161). Technology evolved and Radio stations began use radio as a medium to broadcast news and even music. Instead of having to go to a certain event just to hear music, you could now buy a radio and listen to it in your home. This made the Radio Industry grow as the invention of the radio came to be part of every family's homes. The excitement of having the world heard without ever leaving your house! This was a great phenomenon that brought families closer not only to each other but to society on the outside as they listened to the same station.
